5. Are all external entry doors fitted with a deadlock or a deadbolt?

6. Are security doors and screens fitted and used?

7. Are windows fitted with key locks?

8. Does your home have automatic sensor lights?

9. Are louvre windows fitted with bars or security grills?

10. Are all doors and windows keyed for same key use?

11. Are alarm systems fitted, always used, and serviced regularly?

12. Is there a phone extension in the bedroom?

13. Are your garage and garden shed locked with quality, secure locks?

14. Is your meter box kept locked?

15. Are wheelie bins secured? (so they cannot be used as ladders)

16. Is mail collected and are bins put out when you are away?

17. Are valuables security engraved, labelled and recorded?

18. Are keys kept handy in case of emergency such as fire?

19. Are random security patrols conducted on the premises?

20. Are neighbours, police and your security provider advised when you are going away?

Note: Keys should not be left outside (eg under a doormat or potplant), nor should spare keys be made available to unknown persons such as casual tradesmen (keys can quickly be cut or traced for later use). Your keys should not be labelled with your name or address.

While owning a dog also enhances home security, dog ownership also brings further responsibilities (eg looking after the dog and the safety of others) and expenses such as feeding, kennelling and vet bills. It is therefore recommended that all issues be considered before purchasing a dog solely for security reasons.
